Information for Speakers
This page contains information for people who are presenting papers, participating on panels, or offering tutorials at the XML 2006 Conference in Boston.
Contents: Requirements, Technical Tips, Deadlines, and Registration.
Changes and Corrections
To make changes to your presentation or personal information (including biography), please visit the IDEAlliance submission site. After you log in, you will see links on the top right side of the screen to any papers or tutorials you submitted.
We update the main conference website every week or so. With the next update, your changes will be copied over automatically.
Requirements
Please pick up your registration information as soon as possible, so that the conference organizers know that you have arrived.
Please show up at least 15 minutes, and preferably 30 minutes before your session (if your paper is the second one in a session, that means that you need to show up at least one hour before your start time).
If you are using a computer, please test it with the projector before the session begins and inform IDEAlliance staff if there is a problem; likewise, please test the microphone, network connection, and any other electrical equipment you plan to use. Both speakers should do their tests before a session begins.
Deadlines for speakers are listed below.
Technical tips
Unfortunately, incompatibilities between laptop computers and projectors are still common with all types of hardware and operating systems, so it is never safe to assume that your computer will work this time, even if it has in the past. Here are some tips to help avoid problems:
- Carry an extra copy of your presentation on a CD-ROM or USB memory stick. If you have a last-minute technical problem, you can always borrow another computer and finish your presentation. Mailing a copy to yourself at a webmail address is also a good idea.
- A screen resolution of 1024x768 is usually safe. Higher resolutions may or may not work, depending on the projector, so know how to change your resolution quickly if you need to.
- Disabling screensavers and screen blanking will improve your chances of a successful presentation.
- Start all programs (web browsers, editors, live demos, etc.) and open all windows you need before you start, and then switch to them as you need them. Murphy's law clearly states that trying to launch a program during your presentation will fail in the worst possible way.
- If you are using programs other than a slide presentation, set the fonts to a much larger size than normal so that the audience can read them. 18 point text is usually a good minimum; 12 point text or smaller is generally unreadable, especially for audience members near the back.
- Make sure that your battery is fully charged, or plug in your notebook during the presentation.
Deadlines
Tutorial presenters must submit their handouts to IDEAlliance by Monday 3 November 2006, before the conference.
Paper presenters should hand in a formatted copy of their paper (PDF or XHTML) by Monday 18 December 2006, after the conference, for inclusion in the online proceedings.
Panellists are not required to submit papers for the proceedings.
Registration
IDEAlliance offers free conference registration for the primary presenter of each paper and tutorial, as well as for panellists. The free registration includes access to the conference, exhibition, and lunches from 5-7 December (also the 4 December lunch for tutorial presenters). The free registration does not include travel costs, hotel accomodation, access to tutorials, or the closing banquet on Thursday 7 December. The free registration also does not include additional presenters for a paper, but again, these are available at a discounted cost: $350 for IDEAlliance members or $600 for non-members for each additional speaker.
The regular free registration is automatic — simply show up at the conference and pick up your registration. If you are interested in attending tutorials or the closing banquet at a discounted cost, or if you would like to purchase an additional discounted registration for a co-presenter, please get in touch with registrar@idealliance.org for more information.
