Abstract
J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc. is the nation's leading supplier of safety, regulatory compliance and best-practice solutions for transportation, manufacturing, construction, human resources, security and general industry. Traditionally, J. J. Keller had used desktop publishing tools (FrameMaker and Interleaf) to create and manage its print publications with multiple copies of the same content maintained separately for each publication. They also used separate systems to maintain some of that same content for software and online delivery, thus adding to the amount of content stored and updated redundantly.
J. J. Keller determined that the inefficiencies of maintaining redundant content and the increasing difficulty of locating and reusing content had become obstacles to realizing sales opportunities in new markets. They had also become hurdles for developing new online content as well as new software and print products. In order to become more efficient and better positioned to meet these opportunities, J. J. Keller aimed to: o Transition their content to XML in order to support reuse among multiple products o Implement a content management system to provide a single source for all content and eliminate redundancy o Implement a new print composition system to support producing pages from XML o Implement content feeds from the CMS to the systems used for online products and software products o Implement workflow changes to fully realize the benefits of this new environment
J. J. Keller has implemented these changes and is in the midst of transitioning all content to the new systems. The benefits being realized include: o Improved ability to develop and deliver new products using existing content assets o Reduced costs and time resulting from eliminating redundant content o Reduced costs and time from streamlined, more automated processes o Improved ability to monitor and manage workflow o Increased consistency of content and styles across products
