Abstract

The XML implementation layer of the Health Level Seven Version 3 (HL7v3) family of healthcare interoperability standards has attracted criticism from implementers for some time.

On 5 June 2006, Gartner issued a Note entitled "HL7 V3 Messages Need a Critical Midcourse Correction", stating that Health Level Seven must act vigorously to make Version 3 messages easier to use and more compact. HL7 and the English National Health Service (NHS) are working together to improve the situation. This paper will outline the problem and the state of play regarding solutions (by early December). It should be of interest to many delegates at XML 2006, not only from a healthcare perspective but also because the lessons learned are applicable to any large and complex standardization effort, for example in eGovernment.
